This is part 1 of 3 from my contemporary ode to 'The Girl with the Pearl Earring'. Not a museum room, but city sound: collage pieces of tickets, newspapers and labels form the background. Over that layer are thick strokes of paint and splashes set in turquoise, coral and orange.
The face remains calm and confident; the pearl catches one tiny spot of light, just enough. The denim collar and zip give the portrait something everyday-as if you could just run into her on the street.
I wanted to combine the softness of the classic painting with the resilience of today. That "I'm standing there" feeling.
At home, it fits surprisingly easily: above a sofa, near a reading corner or in a creative workspace. The image is powerful but not loud-a mix of street and still life. It reminds me of how tradition and future can coexist: a pearl, but with trainers.
