This is part 3 of 3 from my contemporary ode to 'The Girl with the Pearl Earring'. The zipped collar and scarf on her head form a graphic frame for her proud face. The paint is most tangible here: knife strokes, scratches, drops.
The idea behind this part: daring to choose close. Not the whole story, but the essence. The pearl is small, the attitude big.
I wanted to show how classic painting light can also work with street materials and pop colours. As a result, the work looks simultaneously tough and friendly.
Hang it in a place you walk past every day: hallway, landing, workplace. The image captures different accents each time- cool in the morning, warm in the evening. It is a nod to the old masters and an encouraging pat on the back for now: stay put, keep your own course, shine your way.
