The limestone statue of Moenen was designed by Piet Killaars and placed on a staircase between Sint Stevenskerkhof and Stikke Hezelstraat in 1968. Turning his back to the church, Moenen plays an important role in the medieval story 'Mariken van Nieumeghen'. He is the devil, who tempts Mariken to go with him to Antwerp. There they start living together and lead a dissolute life. When Mariken repents, Moenen tries to kill her, but fails. In the end, Mariken's sins are forgiven.
