by Peter Balan

About the artwork

Moïse Kisling was an important Polish-French painter of the 20th century, known for his contribution to Cubism, Fauvism and the Parisian art scene of early modernism. Born in Krakow, Poland in 1891, Kisling moved to Paris in 1910, where he quickly became part of the artistic avant-garde. His works are characterised by vivid colours, bold brushstrokes and emotional expressiveness. Kisling painted portraits, landscapes and still lifes and was particularly appreciated for his elegant depictions of women and nudes. His art reflects a mixture of personal sensitivity and the influences of his contemporaries such as Picasso and Modigliani. Kisling died in 1953 in the south of France, but left behind a rich artistic legacy that emphasises his importance for modern art history.
