This photo was taken during the Loi Krathong festival in Chiang Mai Thailand .
During Loi Krathong, people send their Krathongs on the water, as a ritual to pay their respect to the water and the goddess of water (Phra Mae Khongkha). It is also a way to release negative energies, worries and problems of the past year. While the Krathongs float, a wish or prayer is often said. It is a magical sight when thousands of illuminated Krathongs float across rivers and lakes.
The festivities are marked by colourful parades, traditional dances, fireworks and the popular "Yi Peng"lantern festivals in some parts of Thailand, such as Chiang Mai. In some areas of Thailand, such as Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, there are special events and commemorations for the festival.
Loi Krathong is not only a religious or cultural festival, but also a festive occasion for people to come together, enjoy the beauty of nature and the symbolism of the ritual.
