Monschau on the Rur – half-timbered houses in the old town by Rolf Schnepp

Anyone familiar with Monschau will also be familiar with the distinctive sight of the old town, through which the River Rur winds its way between the closely packed historic houses. It is precisely this combination of water, half-timbered houses and the slate roofs so typical of Monschau that this photograph captures.

The River Rur draws the eye right into the heart of the old town. On the left, the striking red façade catches the eye, whilst on the opposite side the historic half-timbered houses nestle close to the hillside. Behind them rises the wooded valley of the Eifel – a landscape characteristic of Monschau.

The photograph was taken using a longer exposure time. This makes the water of the River Rur appear soft and flowing, whilst the houses and their fine architectural details are rendered clearly and calmly. It is precisely this contrast between the moving water and the buildings that have developed over centuries that shapes the atmosphere of the image.

For anyone who knows Monschau and has special memories of the town: whether it’s a stroll through the old town, a stay in the Eifel or a visit to the River Rur. This image does not simply depict just any historic half-timbered town, but a very characteristic view of Monschau on the River Rur – and with it, a piece of the Eifel that you’ll be happy to take home with you.
