Beautiful Moroccan flag in the Sahara desert. Photo was taken in Morocco. The magical Sahara is the largest desert in the world. Part of it lies in southern Morocco, including the famous sand dunes of Erg Chebbi. You can go camel trekking, visit nomadic villages or spend the night in a Bedouin tent under the stars. The Sahara runs from the far south of Morocco and Western Sahara all the way across the width of the African continent through Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Chad and Sudan to Egypt. The Sahara gets its name from the Arabic language where the word sahra means 'desert'. The Sahara is immense with an estimated total area of about 9 million km2. The desert is also home to some wild animal species such as the camel, cheetah and striped hyena. No Moroccan round trip is complete without a visit to (and overnight stay in) the mighty Sahara!
