About the artwork

In the Farmer's Sleeve
Most photogenic street in 's-Hertogenbosch
View of the famous St.Jan cathedral
In den Boerenmouw is a side street of the Hinthamerstraat, approximately at the level of St.Jan's Cathedral. According to Van Heurn, there used to be a house on the corner that wore a farmer's sleeve as a sign, hence the street's name. The street was once called Achter den Boerenmouw. To the left of the Boerenmouw bridge is a fire escape to the Binnendieze. The large building on the right past the little bridge was the parish house of the Redemptorist fathers. In the 17th century it served as a shelter church. Also housed the R.C. Military Association Concordia (1884-1942), led by the Redemptorist fathers. Now it is a residential house. The alley once housed the Hendrik van Neijnsel Guesthouse (1355), destined for 13 old women.
The street opens into the Jeroen Bosch Garden, an official silence area. Originally it was the convent garden of the Redemptorist monastery. We are standing at the back of the former St Joseph's Church, now called the Orangerie. The Orangerie is a centre for conferences, business meetings and recreation. The neo-Gothic church was built in 1859 and until 1971 was part of the monastery next door, now used as an apartment complex. The Redemptorists were much loved, because of their massive soul care to the poor and abandoned. Officially, they were called Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (redeemer in Latin: redemptor).
