Mountain, horses and foal

Wales (obsolete Dutch: Wallis or Kymria, Welsh: Cymru, Latin: Cambria) is part of the United Kingdom as a constituent country with England, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Wales lies in the west of the island of Britain and borders England to the east. Wales has its own language, its own flag and limited internal government, but in international relations, only the United Kingdom counts as a sovereign state. Historically, Wales as a whole has never been an independent state.

Wales has just over three million inhabitants, a sixth of whom still speak Welsh. The name Wales comes from the Germanic word Walha (stranger), which may have been derived from the name of the Celtic tribe the Volcae. Wallonia, Wallachia and Wallis are also derived from this word.
