Wonderful detail in this picture is the tiny fly on the left mushroom.
Mushrooms come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Some species are there almost all year round, but because of the generally more humid conditions, they celebrate high in the autumn months.
There is something mysterious about mushrooms, as they look beautiful but are often dangerous.
Mushrooms are fungi. Did you know that fungi come in all sorts of colours and shapes? Just think of the pretty, bright red mushroom with white dots! Beautiful fungus, isn't it?
The mushroom you see above the ground is actually only a small piece. The rest of the fungus, the fungal threads, are hidden under the ground or in the wood. Mushrooms grow on dead branches and leaves, in the ground or on dead wood. They also grow on trees that are in the process of dying.
When the mushroom matures, the cap bursts open and the spores spread. A year later, new mushrooms then grow on that spot.
