The city of Naples is unique. The centre of Naples consists of a maze of narrow, dark alleyways with a charm all of their own. The layout of the historic centre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still corresponds to that of the Greek colony of Neapolis and visitors can follow the ancient streets. In some places, the remains of the old city walls and city gates are still clearly recognisable.
Naples is a southern Italian city on the Gulf of Naples. In the immediate vicinity is the still active volcano Vesuvius and the Roman city of Pompeii, which was buried by a volcanic eruption and can be visited again today. The history of Naples dates back to the 2nd millennium BC, which means that the city has important art and architecture from many centuries.
Huge cruise ships are often anchored in the harbour of Naples.
Mount Vesuvius is currently the only active volcano on the European mainland. It is 1,281 metres high.
