A highlight in the historic centre of Naples is the Piazza del Gesù Nuovo. On the square, the tall Obelisco dell'Immacolata, which was built in 1747, catches the eye. The Obelisk of the Immaculate (also known as the Spire of the Immaculate) is the most famous of Naples' obelisks.
The 16th century Chiesa del Gesù Nuovo, one of the finest examples of Neapolitan Baroque, is also very impressive. Gesù Nuovo ('new Jesus') is one of the most important churches in Naples and, thanks to its magnificent interior, probably the most beautiful church in the city. The unusual name 'new Jesus' of the basilica is intended to distinguish it from the old Jesus Church. It was originally a palace from the 15th century.
