Near Civitella – Northern View (1837), Ernst Willers Numerous nineteenth-century artists went out into nature to paint, either in their immediate surroundings or on trips further afield. The resulting studies were viewed as the basis for future paintings rather than artworks themselves. Ernst Willers studied in Düsseldorf in the early 1820s and later spent a lot of time in Italy.
