The Old Town Gate was once part of the town fortifications of Neustadt/Harz. It was built in the 15th century, but the half-timbered structure was not erected until around 1680. Neustadt/Harz is a district of the municipality of Harztor in the district of Nordhausen in Thuringia and a state-recognised climatic health resort. The Hohnstein castle ruins, which are over 900 years old, are enthroned above Neustadt/Harz. There is also a Harzer Wandernadel stamping station here.
The Harz is a low mountain range in Germany and the highest mountain range in northern Germany. It lies at the intersection of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. The largest part of the Harz lies in Saxony-Anhalt, the western part of the Harz belongs to Lower Saxony and a small part of the Harz lies in Thuringia, in the district of Nordhausen.
At 1142 metres above sea level, the Brocken is the highest mountain in the Harz, in Saxony-Anhalt and in the whole of northern Germany. It is located in the Schierke district of the town of Wernigerode in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt.
