About the artwork

Nieuw Ehrenstein is a castle-like farmstead, situated in the Anstel Valley, in the Dutch municipality of Kerkrade.

The farm was built in 1753 by Hendrik Poyck, lord of Erenstein Castle. It was a leasehouse of the castle. It was inhabited from 1808 to around 1920 by noble families: Von Verden, Corneli and De Maurissens. At this time it was a comfortable residence, to which a large country house under mansard roof was added. At that time there was also a beautiful garden and a conservatory. When the property was sold around 1920, it became a farm again. The gardens disappeared, the mansion was split up and a house was built in one of the stables.

The complex consists of the aforementioned large mansion, which, together with the U-shaped farm buildings, encloses a courtyard. Also some other buildings are still present.

Due to mine damage, the complex fell into disrepair. Nevertheless - thanks to permanent habitation of the house - much remains of the interior from 1830, including the oak floors, murals, stucco ceilings and doors.

In 1967 the property was purchased by the municipality of Kerkrade. At that time, the nearby Dentgenbach business park was developed. The farm section, which was no longer in use, fell further and further into disrepair. However, the house remained inhabited.
