New Orleans – Voodoo

by Vlindertuin-Art

Louisiana Voodoo is a unique syncretic religion and cultural tradition that originated in New Orleans in the eighteenth century. The movement developed through the fusion of West African spiritual practices, the Catholic veneration of saints and indigenous influences. Figures such as the famous nineteenth-century Voodoo queen Marie Laveau played a central role in shaping this tradition and establishing its social standing in the city. Elements such as lwa (spirits), talisman pouches (gris-gris) and ritual music remain an integral part of New Orleans’ cultural and historical heritage to this day.

Travel posters emerged in the nineteenth century when the rise of lithography and rail travel made it possible to reach large audiences. Governments and railway companies used these posters to stimulate tourism and promote remote areas. From the 1920s and 1930s onwards, they developed their distinctive, stylised visual language, centred on simplified forms and flat colours. This visual tradition emphasised recognisability and romanticism, and for decades set the visual standard for the tourism industry before photography became dominant.

This design brings together various symbols and elements of the Voodoo tradition in New Orleans. The composition centres on a ritual altar featuring statues, candles, a gris-gris pouch, a skull and a snake coiled around a staff. In the background, the city’s distinctive architecture is visible, featuring a cast-iron balcony, a swamp cypress with Spanish moss and a night-time street scene.
