In 1183 Axel, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, Zeeland, received city rights. During the Eighty Years' War, the city of Axel became part of the State-Spanish lines. Around Axel there are several creeks, such as the Axel creek, as can be seen on the picture. The water tower in Axel was built in 1937 and is one of the highest water towers in the Netherlands. The top is covered with copper, which is oxidised and has the characteristic green colour. Nowadays the ground floor is equipped for exhibitions. The tower can be climbed.
