The aurora (Aurora Polaris) is a geomagnetic light phenomenon in the upper layers of Earth's atmosphere. When an eruption on the sun sends a stream of charged particles towards Earth, molecules in the upper layers of the atmosphere are excited and start emitting light. Exactly how neon lighting works too, but a whole lot more impressive when you see it with your own eyes ;-).
