Nude portrait in backlight

by Atelier Liesjes

This is an atmospheric black-and-white studio photograph in the tradition of artistic nude photography, shot using a distinctly low-key lighting technique with strong backlighting (contre-jour). A young, nude woman is depicted facing the camera, with her arms crossed in front of her body beneath her breasts in a gesture that conveys both vulnerability and self-protection. The light falls from behind and above, creating a bright rim of light (rim light) running along her hair, shoulders and cheeks, whilst her face and torso remain largely shrouded in soft shadows. This interplay of light and dark — chiaroscuro — lends the composition an intimate, almost classical air, reminiscent of Baroque painting, yet presented in a contemporary photographic style. The theme is the human figure as a vessel of emotion: sensuality, stillness, introspection and a certain vulnerable strength. The model’s gaze is calm and directed straight at the viewer, creating a personal, almost intimate atmosphere. A wealth of detail lies in the fine strands of hair catching the light, the dust particles in the beam of light, the pearl earring and the graceful tattoo on her shoulder — elements that add individuality and a modern, urban character to a timeless nude study.

The style is realistic fine-art nude photography, with an expressionist emphasis on mood and contrast rather than documentary detail. The colour palette is monochrome: deep blacks, soft greys and a radiant white along the edges of the silhouette, set against a uniform, dark background.
