About the artwork

The nymph lies back naked with a broad smile, her belly, torso and breasts exposed. The girl is holding the satyr by the chin. Also this guy is laughing almost naked wide while he is scantily dressed with only a few leaves looking at the woman.

The satyr is a cheerful and naughty forest creature and has the task of a fertility spirit. Buck's tail, ears and sometimes also legs, and an erect penis are among its physical characteristics. Satyrs are usually very hairy and wear a beard. The satyr is known for its appetite for wine and the seduction of nymphs. Satyrs let instinct prevail over reason, anarchy over order, ecstasy over asceticism, abundance over moderation. They symbolize lust and ecstasy.

The nymph is a graceful girl, who was a personification of life and the restless activity that reigns in nature. She was a tender and sweet damsel, who, although generally friendly toward men, did not take pleasure in the proximity of human dwellings, but retreated shyly into the solitude of the forest and mountains, which provoked quiet thoughts and sweet dreams.

Gerard Hermansz. van Honthorst (Utrecht, the Netherlands, 4 November 1592 - 27 April 1656) was a Dutch painter, one of Caravaggio's most gifted followers. He is counted among the Utrecht Caravaggists.
