The Luchtspoor was a 2.2-kilometre-long railway viaduct in the Rotterdam - Breda railway line that passed right through the centre of Rotterdam and with bridges over the Nieuwe Maas and Koningshaven rivers. It started at Hofplein station and ended at the start of the fixed bank connection across the Nieuwe Maas; its official name was Binnenrotteviaduct. This railway viaduct was opened on 28 April 1877 as part of the state-constructed connection from Amsterdam to Belgium. It is the only railway line in the Netherlands built right through a historic city centre. Naturally, this brought with it the necessary inconvenience; nevertheless, over time, the Luchtspoor became an inseparable part of Rotterdam's cityscape. Conversely, the Luchtspoor offered train passengers spectacular views of the bustling city.
