The first jetty of the Oude Haven in Rotterdam's Maritime District is said to have been constructed as early as around 1350, making it the oldest port in Rotterdam. In the Oude Haven area, we also find a not-to-be-missed historical attraction: the White House, Europe's first skyscraper, built in 1897 on the model of American skyscrapers. At the time, it was the tallest office building in Europe and it survived the German bombing in 1940. The White House is 11 storeys high and stands on a thousand piles. In the background, the red Willemsbrug overe the New Maas, connecting the right bank with the North Island.
