The Berkmeer (North Holland) is teeming with dykes, ditches and meadows. The normally wide rural view is obscured from view by fog on this day. The old shed is still clearly visible, but the fence in the background is already almost completely shrouded in fog.
The Berkmeer is a polder and residence in the Dutch province of North Holland. Plans to make the Berkmeer dry existed as early as 1609. At the time, they were not implemented. The proposed embankment of neighbouring Heerhugowaard prompted the reinstatement of the plan. On 21 March 1633, the States of Holland and West Friesland granted a patent for the embankment of the Berkmeer. Just two years later, in June or July 1635, the entire polder had been measured and parcelled out. A land survey determined the total new land at 301 mornings and 546 roeden.
