I took this photo of old wooden breakwaters near Paesens-Moddergat, a small village on the Wadden Sea in the Dutch province of Friesland.
On the night of 5-6 March 1883, disaster struck this fishing village. During a heavy storm with waves as high as 20 metres, 17 boats were wrecked and 83 fishermen lost their lives. The disaster punched a hole in the community. A monument on the seawall still recalls those days today.
With this story in my head, I took this black-and-white photo. The many birds flying away over the sea reminded me of all those men who did not return to their families.
I am Anne Wil and I prefer to photograph when I am travelling or taking a walk closer to home. My lens finds what makes me smile, hopefully you too. Enjoy!.. Read more…
