Ophelia among the Flowers, Odilon Redon (1905)
In William Shakespeare's "Hamlet," Ophelia, the tragic protagonist, lies in a brightly lit area surrounded by vividly hued flowers. In contrast to her colorful environment, her face lacks any hint of life, leaving it ambiguous whether she is deceased or merely slumbering. The motif of youthful, yet doomed, loveliness intertwined with notions of dreaming, slumber, and demise was a common subject in the art and literature of the 19th century, especially towards its end.
