The judgement of Paris
All the gods are invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, except Eris, the goddess of discord. So offended, she throws a golden apple labelled "The Most Beautiful" from the door among the celebrating gods of Greek Olympus.
This leads to a dispute between Hera, Athena and Aphrodite as to who is entitled to the apple.
Zeus, as the highest Olympian, wisely pulls himself out of the affair and places the judgement in the hands of a mortal: He appoints young Paris, the handsome son of the Trojan king Priam, as the arbiter.
Each of the goddesses offers him a prize: Hera promises him dominion over the whole world, Athena promises valour and victory in war, while Aphrodite offers Paris the love of the most beautiful woman in the world. With this reward, Aphrodite can decide the judgement in her favour. However, the most beautiful mortal, Helen, was already married to Menelaus, the powerful king of Sparta.
The theft of Helen is said to have triggered the Trojan War.
In the picture we see Hera with the "apple of discord" in her hand, which she now has to hand over to Aphrodite.
