The fantastic Palácio da Pena Palace is one of the greatest examples of the revival of Romanticism in Portugal in the 19th century.
The palace is located on the hill Monte da Pena and was built on the site of a monastic monastery of the Order of St. Hieronymus. It was the fruit of the imagination of Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, who married Queen D. Mary II in 1836. He fell in love with Sintra and decided to buy the monastery and the surrounding lands to build the royal family's summer palace there.
He applied Portuguese architectural and decorative forms in revitalist style (neo-Gothic, neo-Manual, neo-Islamic, neo-Renaissance) and around the castle he had a magnificent English-style park built, with a wide variety of exotic tree species.
