Panorama Dingli Cliffs, Malta
The Dingli Cliffs form a twelve kilometre long natural wall of rock along the south coast of Malta. The cliffs, which average about 220 metres in height, are located about three kilometres southwest of Rabat. They are probably named after the English knight Sir Thomas Dingley. He owned a lot of land in the vicinity of the cliffs. In 1539 he was sentenced without trial for high treason against the British king and then beheaded on Tower Hill in London.
In the past the cliffs offered natural protection against enemies. They could not be used from the open sea to reach the mainland of Malta. The cliffs look very impressive and offer spectacular views over the sea. For example, it is possible to see the uninhabited island of Filfla from the cliffs.
