This panorama was taken from the Euromast just after sunset.
The Euromast was erected on the occasion of the Floriade in 1960 by architect Huig Maaskant and contractor J.P. van Eesteren in Het Park, near the entrance to the Maastunnel. The building was officially opened by Princess Beatrix on 25 March 1960. The location was strategically chosen; anyone driving to Rotterdam on the then existing motorways could see the 107-metre-high tower (including the flagpole) towering straight ahead above the city. But the city grew and buildings got taller. After a few years, buildings were rising above the Euromast.Space Tower File:Euromast gets 78m higher Week Number 70-12 - Open Images - 31918.ogv Film Euromast gets 78m higher In 1970, an 85-metre-high superstructure was placed on top of the Euromast; the Space Tower, making the Euromast Rotterdam's tallest structure again. The tower now has a total height of 185 metres. Visitors can take the Euroscoop, a lift that is glazed all around, from the Euroscoop deck at 112 metres to its highest point at 180 metres. Visitors are taken to the original highest point by two lifts that both travel four metres per second.
