Donker Utrecht Profile picture Park Servaasbolwerk / Sonnenborgh in Utrecht with museum and observatory Sonnenborgh Park Servaasbolwerk is part of the Zocherpark. This city park, several kilometres long and located along part of the canal, was designed by 19th-century landscape architect Jan David Zocher jr. With a few exceptions, the centuries-old city defences were demolished with the construction. Much of the cleared space was then used to build the park. The Sonnenborgh stronghold was built between 1544 and 1558 by Emperor Charles V to defend the city. The three other bastions he had constructed were Manenborgh, Sterrenburg and Morgenster. Professor Buys Ballot arranged for the observatory to be moved from the Smeetoren, where meteorological observations were already being made, to Sonnenborgh in the mid-19th century. In 1854, he founded the Royal Meteorological Institute (KNMI) here. After KNMI moved to De Bilt, Sonnenborgh was once again all about observatories. Now it houses Sonnenborgh - museum & observatory. This photo was taken at dawn on 16 December 2018. Dark Utrecht. That's the name of my series of photos of Utrecht places after sunset. Most Dark Utrecht photos were shot at dusk. https://donkerutrecht.nl/

Dark Utrecht. That's the name of my still growing series of photos of Utrecht places after sunset. Most of the Dark Utrecht pictures I take in the evening twilight. In the 'blue quarter' to be more precise. After sunset the sky quickly turns an intense dark blue and at some point a perfect balance is created between sky light on the one hand and street and building lighting on the other hand.

Characteristic for my style is the balance in the often tranquil image, the rich, intense colours and the absence of chaos.
