About "Park Sonsbeek"

by Jeroen de Jongh Photography

About the artwork

Park Sonsbeek in Arnhem is the most famous park in this city. It takes its name from the stream of the same name which was originally called Sint-Jansbeek. It is 67 hectares in size and borders the parks Zijpendaal and Gulden Bodem in the north. These three parks are closely linked to each other and together they cover some 200 ha. Sonsbeek is bordered to the east by the districts of Sonsbeekkwartier and St. Marten, almost to the south by the centre and to the west by the Mayor's Quarter. The area is a protected cityscape.

The majority of the park is planted with a centuries-old beech forest. Striking is the hilly character. It also contains a great diversity of trees and plants, has a large number of ponds, fountains and two waterfalls. On the edge of the park, the Dutch Water Museum has been located in the former Beguine Mill since 2004. Nearby is also the De Witte Watermolen, the only still working watermill of the ten that stood along the St. Jansbeek. The Molenplaats Sonsbeek visitor centre is located in the mill's barn.

Furthermore, on the territory of the park, you will find Huis Sonsbeek ("The White Villa" in the vernacular), a teahouse (the Palatine), two restaurants (the Farm and the Sonsbeek Pavilion), an ice cellar from the early nineteenth century and the Belvédère.
