The southernmost tip of the Netherlands. Stichting het Limburgs Landschap's Bellet orchard is a beautiful orchard with old standard fruit trees between Cottessen and Camerig. The country road that runs downhill here towards the Geul valley passes the orchard and then turns left into it. Open to the public, old fruit varieties and magnificent trees can be enjoyed. The view over the Geul valley is breathtaking.
I love coming there, South Limburg is where I was born and raised. The slopes, plateaus and stream valleys interspersed with meadows, fields, forests and graves house a biotope quite unique to the Netherlands. The painting I do in oil makes one feel hushed. You can almost smell the specific scent of loess, the tender vegetation blistering in the sun. Hedgehogs, swallows, the occasional buzzard and farm tractor fill the valley with their sounds.
