Penetrating view of a cuckoo owl.
This small owl species is found in Australia and New Zealand.
The sound this bird produces resembles "cuckoo" hence the name.
The owl lives in the rainforest. This one was photographed in a nest box at the owl sanctuary.
During the day, the owl sleeps. It does so in a fixed place called the roost. Owls are very difficult to detect at their roost.
Owls belong to the solitary birds, they are usually active at night.
Because the eyes are side by side at the front of the head, they can see depth. To be able to see in all directions, an owl must always turn its head, which they are very good at doing.
Owls have well-developed ears, which are far apart, making them good at determining the direction from which a sound comes.
Owls play a role in mythology, symbolism and literature.
