The town of Peníscola has seen many civilizations pass by including the Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Byzantines, Greeks and Phoenicians. The old city was the home of the anti-pope Benedict XIII who lived here in 1411. He has been one of three popes to have their seat outside of Vatican City. A 14th-century castle stands on the rock, with its summit 64 meters above sea level. Strategically located on a peninsula and built between 1294 and 1307, the castle stands on the ruins of an ancient Arab citadel. Sights around the Castello de Papa Luna include gardens, an arsenal and a basilica.
