I made this image from an elevated point at day’s end as warm evening light reached across Piazza San Marco and the lagoon. The long line of arcades drew the eye to the square while Santa Maria della Salute and the islands set the far horizon. I wanted orientation and breadth, a view that explains how the city meets the water.
A careful aperture held detail from rooflines to paving, and a steady support kept the frame clean. Look for small groups of people that scale the space, a thin ribbon of light along the quay, and the soft edge where the lagoon meets the sky. I kept color balanced so the photograph lives easily with modern interiors.
The atmosphere is thoughtful and bright. For me this picture is about context and memory, the clear geometry that makes Venice both intimate and open.
