Black and white picture of a Crookes radiometer (light mill) that rotates under the influence of the flame of an oil lamp. The Crookes radiometer or light mill is an experimental arrangement consisting of a glass bulb containing four metal wings mounted on a spindle. The wings are black on one side and on the other side are mirrored. The air pressure in the sphere is low, about one-thousandth of an atmosphere. When the wings are exposed to light they will turn. This solar engine was designed by British chemist William Crookes in 1873.
