About ‘Pipe smoking man, Gerard Dou, ca. 1650’
Pipe smoking man, Gerard Dou, ca. 1650
A young man looks at us from a window, smoking a pipe. Dou is a master at creating illusions. The open book seems to be sticking into our space from the window, and the green curtain on the copper rod is so realistically painted that we are almost tempted to pull it aside. Even so, the painting is so small that it reveals its deception.
