The Earth is the third planet of the solar system, counting from the Sun. Herein she belongs to the "terrestrial planets" of which she is the largest both in mass and volume. The Earth is home to life: it is the habitat of millions of organisms.[1] Whether it is alone in this is unclear, but in the rest of the universe no traces of life have been found so far. Radiometric dating has shown that the Earth was formed 4.57 billion years ago,[2] and life a maximum of 1 billion years later.[3] Since the emergence of life on Earth, the Earth's atmosphere has gradually become oxygen-rich, allowing a protective ozone layer to form and aerobic organisms to develop.
