About the artwork

Analog mathematical art: The physics of the force-free gyroscope, visualized using traditional techniques of descriptive geometry.

From the perspective of an observer in the gyroscope system, the angular momentum vector describes the intersection curve of a sphere and an ellipsoid: the former is determined by the magnitude of the angular momentum, the latter by the rotational energy.

A homage to Louis Poinsot's geometric theory of the gyroscope.

Part of a series of drawings featuring differently shaped ellipsoids and different viewing angles.

Number 2 resembles a Zeppelin, and the radius of the sphere is equal to the intermediate axis of the ellipsoid - signifying unstable rotation.

Graphite pencil construction, watercolor pencils on 21cmx12cm watercolor paper.
