About ‘Porcelain Painting (Still Life of Flowers in a Vase), Joseph Nigg’

Porcelain Painting (Still Life of Flowers in a Vase), Joseph Nigg

Porcelain paintings were produced in the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in Vienna in the first half of the 19th century by students of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, who also worked in the school of painting at the manufactory. One of the most famous students is Josef Nigg (1782–1863) who was guided by copies of Dutch paintings from the 17th century for his still lifes of flowers, which were painted in enamel colors and subsequently fired again.

Joseph Nigg (13 October 1782 – 19 September 1863) was an Austrian painter, with painting on porcelain a specialty.

Born in Vienna, Nigg studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Johann Baptist Drechsler. From 1800 to 1843, Nigg worked as a flower painter in a Viennese porcelain factory. Beginning in 1835, this post also involved holding classes in painting at the factory.
