About the artwork

Porsche was looking for an affordable entry-level model for the discontinued Porsche 356 and got it through a handshake between VW boss Heinrich Nordhoff and Ferry Porsche.

Initially, it was only offered with an 80 hp 1.7-litre injection engine (D-Jetronic) from the VW 411 E, which accelerated the 940 kg car to 177 km/h. The 914/6, on the other hand, was available with an 81 kW (110 hp) engine.

They were also used in motorsport. In addition, there was an engine with 179 hp from the Porsche 911 2.2 S for a 1000-km race on the Nürburgring, such as in 1970 or at the FIA hill climb in Trento Bondone. However, they were much more successful in endurance races than in hill climbs.
There was also the 2.4-litre six-cylinder engine of the Porsche 911 S with 190 hp and the 2.7-litre engine of the 911 Carrera with 154 kW (210 hp), but these were only installed three and eight times for the Porsche 916.

Later, there was also a special production for Ferry Porsche with 260 hp and an experimental vehicle
for Ferdinand Piëch with 300 hp with the designation 914/8, because an 8-cylinder boxer engine with 2997 cm³ was installed in each case.

The VW-Porsche was built from 1969 to 1976 and most of the 914/4s were produced by Karmann in Osnabrück. The 914/6 were assembled at Porsche with the 110 hp (81 kW) 2.0-litre six-cylinder boxer engine from the Porsche 911 T in Stuttgart.
