The name Porsche Carrera refers to a number of highly powered sports cars made by the German car manufacturer Porsche. The word "Carrera" comes from Spanish and means "racing", but also "career". In the case of Porsche, however, this word refers to a Mexican race on public roads that was first organized in the 1950s: Carrera Panamericana. In 1954 Hans Herrmann and a Porsche 550 Spyder achieved a sensational third place in the general classification of this race, in which, with a displacement of only 1.5 litres, he managed to stay close behind two clearly much more powerful Ferraris with a 4.5 litre engine. Porsche therefore easily won the class victory. Since then the addition 'Carrera' has been used for particularly powerful Porsche models.
