The town grew to such an extent that some of the reinforcements wer dismantled on the orders of Colbert. Abraham Duquesne then changed the port of yore in a floating dock, which was completed in 1684. It is this "old dock" (Vieux Bassin) to which the current tourist reputation of Honfleur is based. Part of the wealth of the city at the time was assured by the distant water fishing for cod in Newfoundland and trade in skins. Sailors as captain Morel Beaulieu and the sheriffs-Admiral Hamelin and Motard from Honfleur excelled during the wars of the French Revolution and the Empire. The loss of the French colonies in America, competition from Le Havre, the wars of the French Revolution and the First Empire and the blockade of the continent by the English caused Honfleur of decay. It was in the 19th century to recover only partially, because the timber trade with Northern Europe.
