A portrait of two men reading in Volendam costume.
The portrait was made around 1905 and now that it has been restored and softly coloured, it could easily be a work by Rembrandt or Vermeer if they had lived in the 20th century.
The portrait has all the characteristics of both painters: the diagonal lines, the light coming from one source and the colour palette.
The men appear to be brothers and engaged in a courtship. The Zeitgeist of the Volendam fishermen beautifully depicted in a catchy portrait.
