Constantijn Huygens was the secretary of Stadholder Frederik Hendrik and a leading art connoisseur. He himself described how this painting came about. Lievens painted the portrait in two sessions, first the clothes and the hands and later the face. As a result, the scale is not quite right: the head is relatively small.
