Portrait of Isabella Brant
Peter Paul Rubens
c 1620-25
The Cleveland Museum of Art
Isabella Brant was the first wife of the Flemish Peter Paul Rubens. In his lifetime, he painted her several times in various ways. Unfortunately, she died at a young age, 35. This painting was done in the last 5 years of her life.
The painting has a dark painting palette with colors like brown and black. Yet the skin also shows more vivid colors, due to the warm red that shines through her skin.
The brush strokes are dashing and the expression on Isabella's face vivid.
This painting is an example of painting from the Baroque period.
