An elderly batik artist applies hot wax to a white cloth. When the whole cloth is filled with the pattern, the cloth is dipped in a bath of textile dye, then dried. It is then dipped in a hot bath which causes the wax to wash away, revealing the empty spots, where the wax has been. Depending on the complexity of the pattern, this process can be repeated several times, with a different colour each time.
