Portrait of a Young Man (perhaps an artist), workshop of Rembrandt van Rijn
Wearing a heavy coat and floppy velvet cap, this young man addresses us with a slightly bemused expression. His costume suggests that he is an artist, and it is believed that this portrait was done by one of Rembrandt’s pupils, observing a colleague in the studio. The sensitive handling of the shadows on his forehead and the sitter’s beautifully rendered right eye suggest the hand of a talented young painter.
