Impressive portrait of this great griffon vulture in the mountains of Spain, Catalonia. An adult vulture is 95 to 110 cm long, measured from head to tail. The wing span is 2.4- 2.8 meters. The weight of an adult specimen is 6.0 to 11 kilograms.[2] This makes the bird one of the largest flying birds in the world. Unlike eagles, the head seems small, it is curved downwards in flight.
The griffon vulture is sandy to dark brown in colour, the head and neck are white, as is the collar between neck and body. The flapping pins (the 'bearing' feathers on the wings with which they fly) and the tail feathers are darker to black. Young specimens have a brown collar and are darker in colour. The wings are long and wide, the wingtips are somewhat reminiscent of fingers in flight. The legs are relatively short.
