Portrait of a man, Adriaen Thomasz. Key, 1581
Unfortunately, it is not known who this man with a pleated collar and cut gambeson is. The inscription in the upper left-hand corner betrays that in 1581, when this portrait was painted, he was 38 years old. Based on his Latin motto 'Patientia Spe' ('With patience and hope'), the man must have been thoughtful in nature. That's the quality he radiates here, too.
